Welcoming the koalas: Australia speaks

The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary might be the jewel in
the Coolangatta crown – and “heaps better than those useless
cartoon characters at Movie World”
, according to TripAdvisor user
Brian F – but this month, it’s the team of real-life koalas that
have become the town’s new star attraction.

The arrival of the Coolangatta Koalas to the Queensland border has generated a lot of feelings amongst locals – some are astonished, many are nervous, everyone is excited.

Even non-footy fans have got amongst it as coach Wendell Sailor and the players (Demi Lardner, Nina Oyama, Jordan Raskopoulos and Neel Kolhatkar, that would be you) embarked on their official tour of Coolangatta’s very high number of surf life saving clubs.

The reception was nothing short of positive. Dell and co. are now confident that once they’ve proven themselves on the football field in the 2021 season – and even if they don’t – a bronze statue of the team will be erected. And obviously, it will replace the current memorial to Captain Cook on the headland.

But enough about what the Coolangatta Koalas think about themselves, here’s what Australia is saying...

Not since the opening of Fisher’s Fish N Chips On The Beach at Kirra back in ’97 has there been this much buzz about the place. In honour of the Koalas, we’re giving away three free calamari rings to every customer who presents this article at the counter.

Tell you what mate, when news broke down at the Cooly Hotel that the Coolangatta Koalas were dead-set getting called up to the big league I nearly choked on my schnitty. I first thought Kev was spinning a yarn, trying to be funny because he’s a lying dog who still owes me $20 from last year’s tipping comp. Anyway, that’s not the point haha. We’re bloody stoked.

Back in 1953 there was a jingle used
in our tourism ads called It’s Hot in Brisbane but it’s Coolangatta.

I can’t be sure what it was supposed to mean, but I hope the Coolangatta Koalas absolutely annihilate the Brisbane team.

Yeah, the Coolangatta Koalas are pretty sick.

Zac Efron, overheard at a noisy pub just over the border in Byron Bay so may or may not have been heard accurately
